Pain in the neck? It could be from using your phone....Tech Neck is real!

Sam Norton

Ever get a pain in your neck or wonder why your head feels heavy some days? 98% of all adults in the UK own and use a mobile phone, tablet or computer/laptop. 1 in 4 of those will suffer from tech neck. This is a fast growing epidemic. But what is tech neck I hear you say....

Since the use of handheld and seated technology has increase ten fold with in the last decade, more and more people are suffering from tech neck. Tech neck is when the top of the spine starts to curve and the body produces a pocket of lipid tissue (AKA fat pocket) to protect the area. Not only does there become an obvious curvature at the top of the spine and the appearance of a 'hump', but people start to become affected by pain elsewhere in the body, including: lower back pain, decreased mobility in the knees, headaches, arthritis, wrist and hand RSI, shoulder and neck pain as well as other ailments. The official name for the curvature at the top of the spine is Kyphosis.

Previously seen in people over the age of 65, Kyphosis may also be known as 'widows peak/ widows hump' due to arthritis being present in the spine.. This condition is now being seen in people as young as teens. All due to many hours being spent hunched over handheld technology.

The question is, what can you do to alleviate this issue? The obvious answer is postural and put your phone down and look up! This isn't always the most helpful answer in today's society and with the consistent use of handheld digital devices.

Bowen therapy can help reduce pain, rebalance and realign the body to enable self correction through specific moves over the body, aiding relaxation and the autonomic nervous system (think fight and flight V rest and digest) to aid the muscles to realign and support the spinal structure back to it's 'pre hunched' position. A Bowen therapist will also be able to advise at the time of treatment, basic realignment exercises to aid recovery from tech neck. If you are suffering with this issue, or just need to relax and take time out from your tech, get in touch to make an appointment. We looking forward to treating you at The Well-being Hub!
