MSTR® Scar Release Tissue Therapy
Scars are a natural part of healing, but they don't always heal without consequences. While many scars cause no ongoing problems, others may become tight, sensitive or restrict movement long after the skin has healed.
McLoughlin Scar Tissue Release (MSTR®) is a gentle, hands-on technique designed to improve the mobility of scar tissue and the surrounding tissues, supporting comfort, movement and recovery. Treatment is suitable for many fully healed surgical, injury and trauma scars and is always tailored to your individual needs.
How can MSTR® Scar Release Tissue Therapy help?
Many people choose MSTR® to help with:
-
Tight or restrictive scars
-
Reduced movement and flexibility
-
Pulling or stretching sensations
-
Tenderness or discomfort
-
Altered sensation or numbness
-
Supporting movement and recovery following surgery or injury
Suitable for many healed scars including Caesarean section, joint replacement, orthopaedic surgery, abdominal surgery, keyhole surgery and traumatic injuries.
What to expect
Your first appointment lasts approximately 70-90 minutes, and includes a consultation, assessment and treatment. Follow-up appointments are usually 30–60 minutes.
We'll discuss your medical history, the history of your scar and your goals before assessing the area. Gentle fingertip techniques are then applied directly to the scar using light, comfortable pressure—no oils or forceful massage are used.
Treatment is always carried out with your comfort, consent and individual needs in mind. We'll reassess any changes before discussing aftercare and whether further treatment may be beneficial.
Aftercare
Following treatment, it's normal to experience some temporary changes as your body responds. You may notice:
-
Mild tenderness or sensitivity
-
Temporary redness or pinkness around the scar
-
Slight raised areas where the scar has been treated
-
Changes in sensation
-
Improved ease of movement
These responses are expected, usually settle within 24 hours, and are a normal response to treatment.
To support your recovery, I recommend staying well hydrated, keeping gently active and allowing your body time to respond. Any aftercare advice will be tailored to your individual needs.
Research & Evidence
My approach combines current research, clinical reasoning and your individual goals to guide treatment.
While research into scar therapy continues to develop, emerging evidence and clinical experience suggest that MSTR® may help improve scar mobility, flexibility and comfort for some people. As with all therapies, individual responses vary.

A gentle note
Every scar tells a story. For some people, a scar is simply part of their medical history. For others, it may represent surgery, illness, injury or another significant life event.
During treatment, some people notice thoughts, memories or emotions connected with those experiences coming to mind. This is a normal human response and, if it happens, you're welcome to talk about it—or simply sit with it quietly.
Your treatment will always be delivered with sensitivity, respect and your informed consent. You remain in control throughout your appointment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is MSTR® painful?
Treatment is gentle and most people find it comfortable. Some temporary tenderness may be experienced afterwards.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on the size, age and nature of your scar. Some people notice changes after one session, while others benefit from a short course of treatment.
How soon after surgery can I have treatment?
Treatment can begin once the scar is fully healed and there are no signs of infection. If you're unsure, please get in touch before booking.
Can old scars be treated?
Yes. MSTR® can be used on many scars, whether they are several months or many years old.
What should I wear?
Please wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows access to the area being treated. Depending on the location of your scar, you may be asked to undress to your underwear. At every stage of your consultation and treatment, your dignity, privacy and comfort will be respected, and appropriate draping will be used throughout our appointment to ensure you feel comfortable at all times.
